Day 7: Welcome to Operations
All of my roommates had already been through Welcome to Operations by the time it was my turn, so I had an idea of what to expect. It was a four hour class where you learn all about how to safely pick up boxes and extend your arms and all kinds of other things to prevent injuries. You also learn about working efficiently and the importance of keeping your area clean, as well as the importance of being part of the show and keeping the experience magical for guests. The presentation was definitely focused on safety, which can seem relatively dull after an hour or so, but I appreciated that they attempted to make it interesting. I honestly don't even remember what we did that evening, I just know that my roommate Laura got out right before me, so we drove home together, and these birds were just chilling in the middle of the street about a block away from our complex.
Also, that evening was the Super Bowl, which we technically watched but not really because none of us are really "football" people, plus it took too long to find it on TV and I kept stopping on other channels.
Day 8: Welcome to Lodging & Custodial
Day 8 was a much longer training day. The first two hours were "Welcome to Lodging" where we learned all about the different resorts, their ratings and amenities, and all the different roles within them. After that we broke into classes based on our specific roles, so I was in a class with about 20 other custodial cast members, some in the college program and some who weren't. We went over the basic tasks of custodial cast members, and learned about blood-borne pathogens and all the different chemicals we'll be using.
After my training I went to Costuming to pick up my super fashionable slip-resistant black sneakers, and on my way home I ran into these guys just outside our gate! They were getting bolder.
I planned to include another picture of them on here, because two days later Lisa and I ran into them one building away from ours, but I apparently didn't save my snapchat photo. I'm pretty sure these birds were stalking me.
Day 9: Property Orientation
I finally got to go to Coronado Springs Resort! When we got there we sat down at tables, and I think there were about 20 of us being oriented. They started off by putting sombreros on the ground and playing music, and we danced around the hats with maracas before taking a group photo. It was hilarious and fun, and everyone was so friendly and welcoming. After that we learned a bit about the history of the resort and all of its areas before going on a pargo tour of the property. You'll find there are a great deal of made-up words used at Disney, and pargo is one of them. It's basically a golf cart that's configured to carry passengers, luggage, or trash. Not together, of course. Each of those things would have its own special pargo. The tour was lovely. The resort is quite large, with three main living areas all situated around a large lake. We have an enormous convention center and four pools, as well as seven dining areas.
After our tour, we made our way to Costuming. While most people were in and out with properly fitting pants, it took me a little longer. The ladies in costuming liked to send me to the changing room with tiny ladies pants that fell about four inches above my ankle, so after a few highwater fashion shows they finally conceded to put me in men's pants. After finding our proper costumes we were free to leave! The resort was really beautiful, and everyone was so friendly it just made me excited to start. But that story is for another day!
After my orientation I headed home, where my roommate Lisa and I decided it was time for froyo. We drove around for a bit before finding a ritzy shopping center with a Menchie's where I gorged myself on cookie batter/chocolate/some-other-flavor yogurt covered in every chocolate and peanut butter topping they had. It was a disaster, and thankfully there is no photographic evidence.
