Day 25: Outside
On Day 25, I was given a bit of a challenge. Up until this point I had only worked in the convention center, and I was getting quite used to it. That was of course until I showed up Thursday morning and found out I was scheduled to work outside. At the time we were going through a bit of a cold spell. After the sun went down it would get COLD. I mean Washington cold, in the high thirties and low forties, but with windchill, so it was also painful. Of course, the morning I was scheduled to work outside, we were still in the throes of that cold spell. The outside person's responsibilities are to drive around their half of the resort in the pargo, pulling all the trash bags in the parking lot trash cans, picking up litter, wiping down tables, and emptying cigarette trays. It's not a bad section to work, and I enjoy being outdoors, but it was COLD. Right away when I heard I was outside I put on my long-sleeved undershirt, put on my big puffy work jacket, and went to check out a beanie from costuming. My hair was up in a bun and I didn't feel like changing it to be "cute," so I just pulled the beanie on over all my hair. Now if you've seen my uniform, you know it isn't the most feminine thing in the world. I literally wear men's pants because they don't make women's tall enough. Add in a sports bra, a bulky jacket, a job as a custodian, and that cherry-on-top of a beanie, and I looked most definitely like a dude. So it was painfully funny to me when about an hour into my shift, as I'm grabbing something from my pargo, someone says something behind me that I couldn't quite hear. I turn around and he says, "I'm sorry... ma'am," before asking his actual question. It then occurred to me as they were walking away that he didn't apologize for interrupting my work, but for calling me sir.
Still the best part was my sassy mother's response.
Days 26 & 27
On Days 26 & 27 I was back in the convention center. We had a huge church convention going on for those days, so it was really busy. I had a hard time keeping my bathroom areas clean and stocked because they'd be in the convention hall for the service and then all let out at once, and the lines would just be out the door, but they were all so nice! On the first day, so many women thanked me for keeping the bathrooms clean that I counted on the second day. Within two hours, I was up to 17.
